In 2013, after nearly 20 years of drug and alcohol abuse, Kara Burns walked out of federal prison to face the overwhelming challenges of reentering society, addiction recovery and transitioning to a better life. Since her release, she has dedicated her life to educate about addiction, the challenges associated with being an ex-offender, empowering women through support and mentorship and reducing recidivism, especially among incarcerated women.
Kara has overcome the odds. Her story is proof that change is possible and that we are not defined by our past but quite simply, our choices today. She has been featured on Skirt Sports® founder Nicole Deboom's podcast, Run this World and the Capital One® “Time to Give” campaign. Kara was the 2018 keynote speaker Dress for Success Worldwide's "Be Bold Gala" in NYC as well as keynote speaker for Sparks Events representing Dress for Success Denver (DFSD). She regularly speaks for The Re-Entry Initiative, Running Start, DFSD and local halfway houses.
Kara founded ReStart Denver, a community action project sponsored by Dress for Success where she led a team and raised more than $3,000 to meet the needs of women living in a local halfway house. Kara also serves on Running Start’s Board of Directors, a non-profit offering woman a new lease on life through running. Kara’s success can be attributed to forgiveness, fitness, faith and a fierce commitment to never quit trying.
